Pay Attention to Bounces and Why

When an email bounces, it has not been able to be delivered. Most email providers will give you a reason for the bounces and by studying these reasons, you can become better at avoiding bounces.

Here is a list of potential bounce reasons:

1) Hard bounces. A hard bounce occurs when the email address or the email provider is no longer active.

2) Soft bounces. A soft bounce is an email that was not able to be delivered, but possibly can be in the future.

3) Transient mail bounce. A Transient mail bounce is when the server is still trying to deliver the email but is having trouble doing so.

4) General mail bounce. In the case of the general mail bounce, it may be a hard bounce or a soft bounce, but the provider has not distinguished it for you.

5) Blocked mail bounce. A blocked mail bounce occurs when the receiver has bloecked your email address from delivering emails.

6) Out of Office/Autoreply. An out of office or autoreply simply means that the intended recipient is not using their email temporarily, is simply alerting you that the email may not be read immediately, or will be back to it shortly – many times the bounce email will give you a date or time.

7) Virus notification. With a virus notification, something in your email has triggered the virus protection of the recipient to indicate that the email may have a harmful virus.

8) Change of email notification. A change of email notification email simply means that the recipient has a new email address; this can generally be rectified with little effort.

9) Mail spam challenge. A mail spam challenge will ask you to verify the email you are sending to verify that you are not sending bulk unsolicited email. Simply follow the directions on the email and you should have your emails delivered to that address.
